The stone house at 3427 Coleman Road was built in 1934 by Godfrey Swenson as his second home in the neighborhood.  This house is very eclectic, but contains a steeply pitched slate roof that is reminiscent of a French chateau.  Swenson maintained a storage yard of materials and details from demolished buildings and construction over-runs.  He incorporated many of these pieces into this home, including cut stone from the Scottish Rite Temple at Linwood and Paseo, plaster moulding from the demolished New England National Bank building, over-run bits from the Jackson County Courthouse and marble and slate from several other projects.

Things to Notice:

Q:

The very big brick ranch house at 3434 Coleman Road is either a replacement or a major remodeling of the original house that stood on this lot.  This house arrived at its present state in 1941.  This house was once the home of Tom Pendergast, Jr., son of Kansas City’s most infamous businessman, and his wife, Mimi.  Mr. Pendergast valued his privacy and security, so the house is extremely well built and contains security features such as very thick walls, a sealed fireplace flue, very high fences and its own generator.
